Joost Kappelhof is sinds 2001 werkzaam bij het SCP, eerst als survey methodoloog en survey statisticus en vanaf 2019 als afdelingshoofd. Hij heeft aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam een combinatie van psychometrie en wiskunde gestudeerd en hij is gepromoveerd in methoden en statistiek aan de faculteit van de sociale wetenschappen van de Universiteit Utrecht. Zijn proefschrift ging over het uitvoeren van enquêtes onder etnische minderheden en dan met name de invloed van het enquête ontwerp op de kwaliteit van enquête gegevens. Hij is sinds 2005 lid van het Core Scientific Team van het European Social Survey en sinds 2008 kerngroeplid van het Nederlandstalig platform voor surveyonderzoek.
